Assess the view that children today are the victims of adult oppression. Conflict theorists, such as Marxists and Feminists, and childhood liberationists believe that in 2013 children are the victims of adult oppression, however, March of Progress theorists would argue that they are being protected to a necessary extent and not oppressed. One main view that Conflict theorists have is that due to the fear created by the media through stories such as Madeline McCann and Holly and Jessica, parents are now controlling their children to an unnecessary extent. In the Democratic Republic of Congo children are expected to fight in the army from a very young age therefore they could be seen as victimised by adult oppression as they are not in any way protected from the tragedies of war. A Panorama program in 2010 showed that the children who live in the Slums of South Africa often go for whole days without food, are unlikely to have an education, and more often than not they have drug addicted parents. Conflict theorists would use these examples to argue that children are victims of adult oppression. However, in the UK there are also many risks that children can face but they are just very different compared to other cultures and ethnic groups: the advancement of technology means that many children have exposure to inappropriate or dangerous things on the internet such as chat rooms, social networks and pornography…show more content…
Also, they would claim that once the child has been born they are more likely to be healthy because smaller families mean that living conditions have improved. Nevertheless, conflict sociologists have the view that due to dramatic class inequalities poor mothers are more likely to have low birth weight babies possibly because of poor diet and/or smoking through pregnancy. It has been proven that low weight babies are the most likely to have behavioural and/or educational problems, sociologists such as Marxists would argue that these children have been oppressed by their parents because it is not their fault that they are ‘problem’
