OFFICE ROMANCE: Groping for Answers MANAGER'S RESPONSE: 1. Bill chose to hear Randall out as a part of his information gathering process. 2. Bill is concerned that email is not secure and can be easily misinterpreted. He is also concerned that it is a misuse of company property. 3. Bill states that the number one priority is to make sure production does not suffer because of these personal issues. He believes that a harassment suit can be easily avoided, and that by separating the two employees, he can minimize damage to morale. 4. Although Bill will meet with Abbe to hear her side of the story, he will call HR first and solicit their advice. 5. Bill is adamant that he will not meet with the two of them together. He will focus on productivity issues and stay out of the issues regarding their relationship. 6. Bill believes it is appropriate to mention reassignment and termination at this juncture because they are natural outcomes of this type of situation. YOUR RESPONSE: Bill should give Randall the opportunity to argue his side of the story. 2. Bill is concerned that email is not an efficient medium for communicating the issues at hand. 3. Bill is mostly concerned with the productivity of Randall & Abbe's team. He wants to separate them so that the rest of the team can work productively, unaffected by the negativity and tension arising from their interactions. 4. Bill’s first step should be to call HR and seek their advice on how to proceed. Any further communication on the issue could be detrimental in the long run. 5.
