Conflict management refers to the process of resolving a conflict amicably, while ensuring that the conflicting parties realize only the positive aspects of the conflict. In addition, conflict management aims at reducing the negative facets of a conflict. Successful conflict management processes aim at enhancing learning and positive performance in individuals and groups and in organizational setting. Conflict management processes that are conducted well can improve cohesion and performance in all sectors of life. This essay will review an essay by Raymond G. Helmick on the role of religion in conflict management. The purpose of this review is to analyze Hemlick’s contributions towards the process of conflict management. According to Helmick, major world religions have contributed greatly towards the process of conflict management. He reference to religions such as Islam, Christianity, and Jewish, and opines that all of them have played, and continue to play a crucial role in managing conflicts and maintaining world peace. Helmick opines that religion offers a comprehensive outlook on life and the meaning of life. He suggests that religion achieves this by generating and establishing an agenda of its own. He further asserts that most of religious agendas have good purpose. He also asserts that some people may use religion for individual extraneous purposes, which may or may not be in the same spirit as the religion intended them to be, and that may cause conflicts. In his essay, Helmick gives various examples of situations where religion was used for individual extraneous purposes that fueled conflicts. He makes reference to former Yugoslavia where ethnic identities depended on an individual’s religion such that Serb and Orthodox persons could not interact freely.
