Presentation - Analysis Conflict is “a struggle over values and claims to scarce status, power, and resources in which the aims of the opponents are to neutralize, injure, or eliminate the rivals” (page 8). It is “an expressed struggle between at least two interdependent parties who perceive incompatible goals, scarce resources, and interference from others in achieving their goals” (page 9). Conflicts are predominantly present in the business environment, especially between an employer and employee. Thus, we have depicted how a conflict might arise between a boss and his employee in two scenarios, illustrating a negative and positive impact of each. The setting is at a leading Canadian insurance company and financial services provider, Manulife Financial. We are focusing on the tax team and it is the company’s year-end. The manager of the tax team hires a new employee and the new employee’s first task is to do a presentation on the monthly financial reports of the company. The manager has been working at the firm for a long time and therefore, he is used to routine. He provides the new employee with a template to follow. The employee is a new graduate and thus, has new ideas that are more current and desires to apply them to the presentation, thinking they would be better. This is where the conflict arises between the new employee and the manager. The first skit will demonstrate the incorrect approach the employee takes towards the manager to deal with the conflict, whereas the second skit will demonstrate the correct approach. Our first skit illustrates the negative elements of dealing with conflict between the manager and the new employee. Firstly, criticism, also known as a destructive complaint, includes blame and it will leave the other person thinking that you think something is wrong with him or her (slide 13).
