Conflict in Sudan The need for power and control has led to the start of many civil wars.The north and the south were the cause of the war in Sudan. The civil war has affected many people in so many different ways. Some have lost their homes, family, friends, everything. The impact of the civil war in Sudan has affected more than half of the people. Of the 47 million Sudanese people, over two million have died due to the civil wars raging on in Sudan(Military). This war has caused more than 50,000 people, from twenty different countries, to be resettled in Utah and has displaced more than four million. Of the millions of refugees in Sudan only about 70,000 are permitted into the United States each year. More than 80% of the refugees are single mothers who know little to no English(Cortez). A collection of kingdoms make up the country of Sudan. Six million of the people in Sudan live in the southern part. The people of Sudan have two distinct cultures- Arab and Black African(Military). The country is also one of the largest countries in Africa. In 1956 Sudan gained independence from Great Britain, but by then war was already starting between the north and the south. One cause to the starting of this war was the Sharia law(Sudan). The president of Sudan, Omar al-Bashir, has been in office for 21 years. During these years Sudan has seen nothing but war, but removing Omar would only cause more conflict in Sudan. Omar’s government is under attack by combined armies of over 60,000 rebels. Omar was the president during 2005 when the Islamic theologian, Hassan al-Turabi, allowed the terrorist Osama Bin Laden, to establish headquarters of the al-Qaeda group in Sudan(Natsios). The fight between Sudan and South Sudan started over 5 decades ago due to the fact that South Sudan wanted to be its own country, but Sudan wouldn’t let that happen. Sudan thinks everyone
