Character Analysis In Joyce Carol Oates “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” Connie is simply a young girl who is lost in a state of insecurity, rebellion, and narcissism. These were caused by a disapproving mother, an emotionally distant father and the burden of living in a sibling shadow. The only result is a young girl who leads a second life of promiscuity and Shallow attention seeking. The time she finally learns of consequences of going to strange places and not being aware of her surrounding’s, utterly sealed her fate . It’s not easy for Connie to live with her mother, who constantly harps on the way Connie looks and how she doesn’t live up to her sister reputation.
It is evident while reading the story, that Sister is an unreliable narrator. She seems to be envious of her younger sister Stella-Rondo. Sister tells the story only from her point of view, never allowing the reader into the thoughts and minds of other characters. It becomes clear as the conflict unfolds that Sister is one sided and believes her perspective is the only correct one. Sister wants the reader to had empathy for her.
Kamara Bellis Buckner English 1301 25 JUN 09 The Victorian Woman’s Insane Treatment in Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper” During the Victorian era, woman were to be dependant and obedient of their husbands. They were not allowed to pursue careers or interests. Gilman, being a woman of this time experienced this oppression first hand. She had been diagnosed with a nervous condition and was ordered to bed rest after the birth of her child. This ill-fated treatment prescribed by her physician Weir Mitchell, whom she referenced in her story, drove her to the brink of insanity.
In Moore’s “Which is More That I Can Say”, the role-reversal of the search of identity reinforces the image of the dynamic of fear that both mother and daughter have. Mrs. Mallon’s presence in the short story is described as something repelling and invasive towards her daughter’s decisions in life. Abby, having shaped her identity privately tries to alienate herself from her mother’s stronger character in order to have proper control of her life. Mrs. Mallon showing a risk taking behavior, sees her daughter as “a women who expects too much” due to her performance of actions in life. At the end due to the inability of Abby to succeed in her liberty, she witnesses lack of strength and the fear her mother has at the Blarney Stone.
In this famous novel, Blanche Dubois goes to live with her sister Stella Kowalski. She has to tell her sister the bad news that she lost their family home, Belle Reve, and also took off from her teaching job due to her bad nerves. This is the first indication of Blanche’s insanity. She is clearly unaware because she says, “Is there something wrong with me?” Another sign is Blanche’s horrible drinking habit, which research shows can lead to making horrible decisions and can alter ones life. “Both Blanche’s drinking and her endless hot baths suggest that she is attempting to wash away her past and emerge through a sort of watery purgatory.” Stanley, Stella’s husband, does not really like Blanche and accuses her of being crazy, which is an accurate description.
This reflects how she is miserable and alone in England. The bright colours of the “tapestry” reminds her of her mother’s dress, yet this is quickly tarnished by the memory of her mother’s cold reaction to her as a child when Annette looks “away” from her, forcing Antoinette back into the
Rose, the daughter of An-Mei Hsu, is married to Ted and they have a daughter named Jennifer. Rose always tries her best to please her husband and be a perfect mother for their young daughter. Rose is shocked when she learns that Ted has been having an affair with another woman and that he wants a divorce to move in with her. He even wants to sell their house. Yet after her mother tells her the story of Rose's maternal grandmother, who never knew worth until death, the formerly weak-willed Rose becomes determined to assert herself.
The Women in Sweeney Astray Sweeney Astray which was written in thirteenth century begins with a woman who is Sweeney's wife called Eorann. This woman tries to save Sweeney from the curse he is falling into and it ends with a women who is the cause for Sweeney's death through her jealous husband. The women in Sweeney Astray have substantial magical powers such as; seeing the future etc. but they play silent yet powerful figures as it is the femmes fatales that change the sanity and fate of Sweeney's life. We first met with Sweeney's wife Eorann, where she tries to save him that is to prevent him from attacking the cleric Ronan.
This financial difficulty and abject poverty provides a beautiful illustration of motherhood, which is sacrifice for the wellbeing of her children. Meeker sets the tone by exploring the family life in the start of the poem. She uses hyperboles to describe the conditions of the family. Meeker gives a look into the relationship between the mother and her daughter, the narrator’s sister. She writes, “they clawed their womanhoods out of each other” (3) which undoubtedly indicates that the two do not get along.
Wuthering Heights (analysis) Magdaléna Jurkemíková, 2bpANRU For my analysis I chose the passage from Chapter III, Volume II 1 . Isabella is eloping from Heathcliff , she comes to Thruscross Grange and informs Nelly about what had happened at Wuthering Heights. From her letters Nelly already knows, that Isabella leads such a miserable life. She knows her husband loves her sister-in-law, we could even say he hates his wife and treats her badly. Isabella was used to be treated like a princess, to have all the attention by her family and now she is all alone.
