Realizing what is truly important to us is a major step towards achieving personal success. Once a person fully knows who they are, they are able to see limitations and opportunities. Personal success is being able to allow for personal growth. Success can mean having a family, friends, and a mediocre paying job that satisfies. It is important to keep a balance of the important things in one’s life otherwise, weaknesses can be developed that shadows over a person’s natural strength to prioritize.
However, her college experience is where she first interacts solely with the predominantly American culture. In order to pay for school and get good grades, Sara must ignore everything else, including her family, to work and study. Slowly and painfully, Sara learns to talk, dress and act like her American peers. She leaves college with her teaching degree and a thousand dollars, which she won in an essay contest. Feeling successful, Sara returns home to find her mother fatally ill. After her mother's death, her father remarries only to find his new wife, Mrs. Feinstein, is a gold-digger after his late wife's lodge money.
Her estranged father Peter Walker was a West Indian man of color from Saint Croix. Shortly after her father left the family, her mother remarried a Scandinavian man named Peter Larsen. Like many parents of interracial children during this time, her mother was unable to deal with the issues of raising an interracial child and begin to alienate herself from her young daughter. At first Pattyn lashes out and is upset. It was just another reason to feel unloved by her father. After his mother dies he states that he never visited her, “…because it took up my Sunday- not to mention the trouble of getting to the bus, buying tickets, and spending two hours traveling”(5). He wasn’t even willing to go she his mother when she was in a rest home. He tries to excuse himself by blaming it on technicalities. However, no Sunday is as important as bonding with an aging mother. He obviously was never close to her, due to his lack of wanting to visit her.
