The study of concussions is a relatively new research field. It has only been in the last few years research has taken off. This is due to deaths of many athletes involved in contact sports. Deaths not occurring on the playing field but after their careers were over, and attributed to post concussion syndrome. When concussions in sports are discussed the most popular name in hockey today is always brought up. Sydney Crosby missed a full year of hockey due to a concussion suffered playing. This is not only bad for the health of the athlete but also bad for the sport. Millions of dollars are spent to see one individual athlete do what he does best. It is sad it took something economical like this for people to become more concerned with brain injuries in sports.   Concussions are a problem in all contact sports now days. Concussions can have a couple different cognitive symptoms involving attention, there are new ways to study and diagnose concussions, and also new ways to treat symptoms.
One of the most common symptoms felt from receiving multiple concussions is the loss of attention, or trouble keeping attention on one thing for an extended period of time. There was a study done in the Netherlands on soccer players from a Dutch professional league. The purpose of the study was to compare the frequency with heading the ball and the scores on certain cognitive test. The frequency of headers was a direct correlation between concussions the players had received over their careers. The study showed that the number of headers in a season was related to poor test scores which measured focus and attention, as well as visual and verbal memory (J.T.Matser et al, 2001). This study was done on soccer players with most only suffering mild concussions over the season, not to say that severe concussion do not happen in soccer, but they are less common do to the lack of contact that other sports like football have.
