DESCRIPTION OF CONCRETE SANDWICH PANELS: The sandwich panels consist of: 200mm Structural Concrete Inner Leaf 150mm Kingspan Kooltherm K3 Insulation 100mm Concrete Outer Leaf SUSTAINABILITY ASPECT: Concrete as we all know is not a sustainable construction material sue to the Portland Cement content. However if we swap the Portland Cement for Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag Cement (GGBS) we can decrease the carbon footprint of concrete dramatically. GGBS Concrete is stronger and more durable than ordinary concrete, it’s also more effective against chemical attack and in fire. GGBS can replace up to 40% of the Portland Cement content. However this could only be possible if we were to cast these panels on site as panel manufacturers such as Techrete Ltd. And O’ Reillys Concrete will only use their own brand of concrete. Similarly if we were to use LimeCrete (Lime Based Concrete) we could create breathable concrete panels, again Techrete Ltd. Or O’ Reillys Concrete won’t use anything but their own mix. Also LimeCrete is not waterproof therefore detailing is important as most waterproofing agents are not breathable. If we were to swap the chemically based phenolic foam insulation for a more sustainable insulation such as wood fibre insulation (Pavadentro Wood Fibre Insulation) we could further reduce the environmental impact of these panels. However wood fibre insulation is not as good an insulator as the phenloic foam insulation. Wood fibre insulation has a conductivity of 0.042 w/mK while phenolic foam insulation (Kingspan Kooltherm K3) has a conductivity of 0.024 W/mK almost twice as better as the wood fibre.
