Concept Page Problem; Develop a method for a residential gardener to propagate plants. Solution; Harvest seedlings from underneath a mature Japanese Maple (Acer Palmatum) Introduction My name is Brian Gutierrez, and I am a residential gardener. I have a mature Japanese Maple (Acer Palmatum) which drops seed beneath it. Scattered throughout the shade of the tree are little Japanese Maples(seedlings). Since the seeds have already germinated I have one less step to propagate more Maples. Therefore all I have to do is harvest the seedlings from the ground into proper containers, and raise them to be strong healthy trees. Once I raise them to a 15 gallon container I can sell them for profit. With this project I will accomplish showing the steps it takes to propagate (By means of seeding) Japanese Maples, and the budget it will require. Structure Type After pulling the seedlings out of the ground I will transfer them each to their own 4” containers. This is because they range from 1.5” to 3.5” is size, and are ready to be put in 4” containers at this point. I am very green when it comes to plant propagation, but I figured if it “ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. The seeds seem to germinate just fine in the conditions they were in. Therefore I will try to maintain an environment as close to the one I found them in. I will place the containers right back underneath the tree. This will give it the same sun and shade as it was already used to. Plumbing I will leave the plumbing as I found it. What does that mean? Well my dad has spent a lot of hard working setting up the front and back irrigation system at his house, and the mature maple has its own separate irrigation. So by placing the containers back where I harvested the seedlings they will be getting the same water amount that created them. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” Electrical The only
