What benefits did Hershey hope to get out of the implementation of its new system? Consider both impacts on the business and on their technology infrastructure. There were several key reasons Hershey wanted to implement new software. In the candy industry, units are sold for very low prices, which mean massive amounts of candy must be sold to generate any significant amount of revenue. To help with this process, Hershey wanted to improve on their business processes with a more reliable logistics system than their current legacy systems could offer. Also, Hershey wanted to avoid any technical problems facing their legacy systems from Y2K, therefore, they chose to implement new ERP software, rather than pay to have the technical problems caused by Y2K fixed. Other technical issues were taken into account when choosing to implement newer software. One of Hershey’s main goals, when deciding to implement new software, was to upgrade and standardize the company’s hardware. This entailed moving to a client-server environment, TCP/IP networking, and replacing 5,000 desktop computers. Another goal set by Hershey’s information management team was to install bar-coding systems in all six of their US production plants. External factures also played a role in the decision to implement new software. Rick Bentz, Hershey’s VP of Information Systems, noted that Hershey’s spending on IT was less than that of its industrial competitors. Therefore to use and share their data more efficiently and better compete with industry rivals, Hershey decided to implement an SAP software package.
