Computer Pioneer- Douglas Engelbart Douglas Engelbart an inventor and internet pioneer from the United States, was born January 30, 1925 (wikipedia). He was born in Portland, Oregon to Carl and Gladys Engelbart. He is second child of three children, and they are of German, Swedish and Norwegian descent (wikipedia). He graduated high school in 1942, and then went onto Oregon State University, where he studied electrical engineering. While at Oregon State, WWII started and Engelbart took a break from the University to join the Navy, and spent two years in the Philippines as a radar technician (Mitchell, 2002). He obtained his B.S. in electrical engineering in 1948 and went to work for NACA Ames Laboratory (forerunner of NASA). Later he applied to the University of California, Berkeley and obtained his Ph.D. in 1955 (Mitchell). Engelbart began to envision information and how they could be shown on a screen of cathode ray tubes just like the ones he had used during the war as a radar technician, and he dreamed of "flying" through a variety of information spaces (MouseSite). In 1959 at SRI in Menlo Park, Engelbart was provided the opportunity to pursue his visionary ideas further into the formulation of a theoretical framework for the co-evolution of human skills, knowledge, and organizations (MouseSite). He envisioned human communication potential and resource for the growth of human intellect (MouseSite). The first computer mouse was then created at SRI.
