Each investigation is approached differently and the use of the incorrect forensic tools as well as the wrong-handling of a forensic tool can falsify the result of an investigation. Each forensic tool should be used to gain advantages of the investigative outcomes, but each tool can come with disadvantages when used for the wrong investigation or generally used in the wrong way. Computer related forensic tools can help by providing faster results for matches in an electronic database when comparing the tool with using people and prints to look for matches, for example. A good example would be the fingerprinting database, which has been established to be a great help when matching existing fingerprints with the ones found on a crime scene, for example. The results are faster and the evidence can be saved efficiently while the amount of data needing to be searched or analyzed doesn’t matter at times. The ability to search large amounts is tremendous. Computer forensic tools can help properly retrieve and analyze data that is locked or stores on any electronic device (Akkaladevi, Keesara & Luo). Another advantage would be that with a computer the evidence can be copied as many times as necessary to where if data is being altered or deleted, one can simply go back to the copies and leave the original data unchanged while having all these backups if necessary. Unfortunately not all evidence is admissible in court and it is definitely a disadvantage, because it is easy to modify data and hard to proof that one is the original or one has been modified. Either way it can be hard to proof and therefore not everything can used in court. Another disadvantage would be the cost of a computer forensic professional when hired. Not in every case they are worth getting hired because they are so costly (Forensic Science, 2009).
