SHAKESPEARE’S CHARACTERS ARE COMPLEX. JUSTIFY THIS STATEMENT WITH CLOSE REFERENCE TO THE PLAY.

From Macbeth to Hamlet, and Brutus to Juliet, many of William Shakespeare’s characters are complex. Some complexities include them having many sides to them, discernable personalities, and the ability to just say or do something small to suggest something about their true character. In the tragedy Othello, the characters of Othello, Desdemona and Iago are truly complex in their nature. Othello is complex due to the supposed ‘blackness’ of his skin and his tragic flaw, Desdemona is complex because of her queer personality and her mix of emotions, and Iago is complex because he is a pure villain and he has no clear motive for what he does.

Othello is believed to have been a black character, although some see his race as being ambiguous. Either way, Othello is one of Shakespeare’s most complex characters as his life ends in a murder/suicide. At the beginning of the play we see Othello as a noble and valiant general of Cyprus who is highly respected. However in the final act we see Othello as a ‘green-eyed monster’ overcome by his passion, jealousy and quick anger. After Brabantio warns Othello about Desdemona, “She has deceived her father and may thee.” Othello replies “My life upon her faith!” This strong language evokes his overconfidence in himself, and how he assumes that nothing can happen when both of them deeply love each other. Othello starts to become suspicious, angry and confused when he hears what Iago thinks, misjudges what Desdemona says, and wonders what Emilia believes. Shakespeare’s use of black imagery appears quite often to describe Othello’s true character, including Emilia calling him “the blacker devil”.
