Women have long been considered to be part of the lower status when it comes to jobs similar to men. In Arlie Hochschild’s vies, “The feelings of the lower-status partly may be discounted in two ways: by considering them rational but unimportant or by considering them irrational and hence dismissible” (172). This “doctrine of feelings” has been seen to permeate the workforce in such a way that it becomes impossible for women to be respected when they display any sort of emotion. In this essence, women who are considered the lower class in the working environment are oppressed in two ways. The first such way is to ignore any legitimate concerns women have; the second way is to classify any emotion as unnecessary and “irrational.” Women get taken advantage of solely because society has considered them emotional, which in today’s modern society is often mistaken for being unstable.
Though John had sympathy for the family pressures she was facing, but her unpleasant behavior was affecting the efficiency of the entire team and the organization. On the other hand, Andy another employee with CES and a team member for the waste management committee, made it worse by creating negativity in the mind of Vincent on the very first day of his office. Vincent resigned his earlier job because of the internal politics and did not want the same issues again. Vincent tough tried in altering Gwen’s job description but knew she won’t be satisfied with that too. John’s inability to anticipate issues and take up steps to resolve the conflict arising due to the Vincent’s presence is harming the output of the organization.
The noble women didn’t have life any easier, though they were considered lucky compared to the peasants. For these reasons, life was harsh in the middle especially for the women. Harsh punishments were given to all who did not follow the rules given out by the men of the society. In the short story, Blank Spaces by Joanna Cockerline, the acknowledgment of female being inferior creatures in comparison to men is highlighted. Struggle against misfortunes, Elizabeth is oppressed by the social inequality due to the fact that she is a girl. In Blank Spaces, the social inequality implied by the narrative severely impacts Elizabeth’s career hierarchy, character traits, and life experiences. Like many feminist writer, Cockerline focuses her emphasis on how social norm discriminate women by inhibit their job opportunities.
This is sexist because he believes that she shouldn’t be on a ranch as it should be a place only for men. Also, he says she will cause problems just because she is the only woman there. The word ‘jailbait’ In the 1930’s was a sexual connotation that is very sexist in the way George uses it. This insinuates that CW is not equal to the workmen, as she is believed to be weak willed and a troublemaker. Steinbeck uses short sentences to create tension among the bunkhouse as George is sending a message across to Lennie that CW is dangerous and nasty to be around.
All that chaos contributed to the male chauvinism we see in our current society. Women had to handle that change without any moral support. It is also important to remember the important role women took in both world wars. A “Jury of Her Peers”, demonstrates how hard marriage was for all women who did not enjoy their relationships. Women in those types of relationships were treated as objects instead of being valued as women of freedom which represent intelligence, compassion, love and beauty.
True Women and Real Men: Myths of Gender Men and women are equally valuable to society and everyone has their opinions on the qualities that lay within them. There is no right way to act like a man and there is no right way to act like a woman. Society has the biggest effect on genders and their characteristics. “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid’s story specifically gives details about girls’ responsibilities. “Girl” explains how society comes into play when you’re a girl and the effect it has on you in a negative and positive way.
Being a Daoist Priestess shows us that men weren’t the only type of human beings able to hold a place of power. By women obtaining property shows us that women could work for themselves and were independent from men. During this time women were quite happy with their rights, but the smile will soon be wiped off their faces because their rights just keep dwindling down to nothing. During the middle or end of the Tang dynasty and beginning of the Song dynasty women’s rights were at there “peak” and started to decline slowly. The Tang dynasty declined due to loss of communication throughout the empire, generals and officials gaining too much power, and revolts causing the empire to be weak and open for attack.
Furthermore, women gained support for the feminist movement through the social media. Betty Freidman’s, The Feminine Mystique, described the melancholy lives and dissatisfaction that women led because of the restrictions put on them by the male-dominated community. Friedman says, “A woman is handicapped by her sex, and handicaps society, either by slavishly copying the pattern of man's advance in the professions, or by refusing to compete with man at all.” (Friedman 56). This means that women gave up the fight before they even gave it a chance and men took advantage of that. This acclaimed book ignited a dormant fire inside the oppressed women and feminism swept the nation during the 1960s.
This was a label attached by men saying that women were getting out of control because times were changing where women were allowed to have opinions. They did this to try and control women. Symptoms of the said ‘illness’ were nervousness, faintness, insomnia, shortness of breath, loss of appetite for food or sex and more. In today’s society none of these add up to a certain illness, hysteria was just a way to keep women in line when men didn’t want to hear what they had to say. It was very sexist and feminists such as Elaine Showalter believed it was nonsense and is very against it.
