Between the two Flood survivors, Utnapishtim relies more on himself while Noah relies more on God when observing their process of preparation for the flood, and the aftermath relationship of the respective Flood survivors and their God. Utnapishtim only receives a minimal help from goddess Ea: he only receives a warning of the impending flood in his dreams without precise date of its occurrence, and is just advised to make a boat from disassembling his house. Thus, Utnapishtim has to prepare for the flood without guidance from the Gods, relies more so on himself. On the other hand, Noah is informed and guaranteed to be saved by God. Hence, Noah is given guidance and commanded by God from the time of preparation to the end of the flood.
The water represents cleansing, so whereas in the bible the sinners drown in the flood, in the novel they receive the worst of the water damage. Robinson compares the homes of the people in Fingerbone to “foundered arks” because she does not think the people of Fingerbone are good Christians; their homes are not able to withstand the flood, but Noah’s ark was able to because he followed God’s wishes. Out of faith, “Noah knocked his house apart and used the planks to build an ark, while his neighbors looked on, full of doubt” (184). The criticism Noah received did not stop him from doing what he knew was right for himself. Similarly, Ruth and Sylvie continue to do what brings them happiness even though their peers judge them negatively.
If they were all powerful gods couldn’t they have somehow blocked out all the sounds of mankind or even send some kind of warning to the people? In the Book of Genesis God decided that mankind was becoming too wicked, and God was sorry he created them. (Gen. 6:6). I thought that God’s reason made more sense to me; he saw his creation become something he had not intended it to be corrupted and full of evil and he could not stand it. In The Epic of Gilgamesh the gods planned to wipe out everyone, but the god Ea decides to warn Utnapishtim because he was a worshiper of him.
In both stories the gods or God struck down a flood as a symbol of their anger as well. Lastly, at the end of each story, the once perfect creation became cursed, whether it was with sin, or ignorance. Also there are many differences in Genesis and Popol Vuh. First of all, Genesis is a part of the Bible that explains how God created humans. Also Genesis says that there is only one God who created the earth and humans with words.
Muhammad: Marduk’s creation of the human race was for elevation of his rule. He was boastful about his killing and wanted to show his power and what his control could do. He took Tiamat’s body and formed from it the sky, fish, stars, mountains, rivers, stars, and constellations. Jacob: My G-d, G-d of all creatures and creator of the universe, made the same parts of the earth as well. He made it one at a time, separating night from day, sky from sea, fish by mammals, although the book does not really give a thorough reason for this.
Are Humans Good or Evil – Case Study Throughout these two episodes of “Lost” both the good and the evil come out of most of the characters, but the ones’ philosopher theory that is more visibly shining out is Jean Jacque Rousseau’s view of human nature. The first example that happened right from the beginning of the movie is Jack waking up and running back to the plane crash, since that’s where all the survivors are. From him just doing so shows that he would not want to live a life of solitary. He wanted the presents of others; along with helping out as much as he can since he would want support back. A different example or support within group of survivors is when Claire (a pregnant woman) is close to giving birth and she is in need of support and comfort.
Still, there is a similarity between the two stories at this point. The Sun Creation myth talks about Unknowingly, another ‘god’ who is very powerful, and that is part of the sun itself. This is extremely similar to the fact that in the Bible, God and Jesus are one in the same. In the Sun creation myth, the earth came from 16 “hoops.” The four directional powers breathed into these hoops to create the earth. However, in the Bible, there is absolutely nothing in space before God created the universe.
But, on the bible the flood was intended for all of mankind with the exception of Noah and his family and due to man’s wickedness to Yahweh (God), but in the epic of Gilgamesh it was intended only for one city and all mankind and due to excessive man noise that disturb the Gods. In the Bible Yahweh had chosen Noah due to his righteousness but in the epic of Gilgamesh an assembly of gods chose a person named Utnapishtim in a dream but for no reason given. Both men were ordered to build a boat but Noah, which was building the boat only with the help of his family and took him 100 years due to the larger size, try to convince the people to change their evil ways and to repent to avoid the judgment, but by the contrary, Utnapishtim was told to lie to the neighbors so they could help him build a smaller boat in only seven days without knowing the truth. Both of the boats had many compartments inside, covered by tar with pitch on the outside, at least one window and only one form of entry. Noah’s boat was allowed to harbor family members only but Utnapishtim had his Family and few other people that helped him build the boat.
Enili became very angry at the other gods when he saw the boat. Enili asked the other gods if the mortals escaped because no mortals were suppose to have survived the destruction. Ninurta smarted off that Ea did it and he Ea knew everything and makes his own rules. Ea asked Enlil how he could so senselessly bring down the flood. Then he told Enlil that he didn’t tell Utnaplishtim of the flood, he learnt of it in a dream.
With each story, a new tale is unraveled and differences are put aside to reveal an event that was beyond human control. Beginning in both stories, the reader is introduced to the hero that saves all creatures from extinction. These men are ordered by a single god to build an arc, full of the beasts of the land and particular people in which the god wishes to save. These large arcs are build using pitch to keep water from leaking in, and include only one door and one hatch opening. When the arcs are finished, the floods are delivered by rain and wipe out the remaining population of land creatures.
