Jones 1 “Comparison of Christianity, Islam and Judaism” Religion and faith have always been the backbone of Western Civilization. From the polytheistic Egyptians of ancient times to the predominantly monotheistic religious world we live in today. It is comforting for humans to believe in something greater than them and to leave their fate in the hands of a higher power. Today, the three most popular monotheistic religions are Christianity, Islam and Judaism. Christianity and Islam make up the two most popular of all religions. These three faiths all trace their history to the biblical story of Abraham and its one of their many shared characteristics. But, it is not how they are the same but how they are different that makes them what they are. Christianity is the worlds leading religion with more than two billion followers (Christianity). It is classified as an Abrahamic religion (along with Judaism and Islam) because it began with the story of Abraham. Abraham had two sons and Christians follow Isaac, who was the son of Abraham’s wife Sarah. Christians believe in God as a trinity, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. This has brought about some confusion about whether or not Christianity is truly a monotheistic religion. But, the trinity is not three separate gods rather it is three forms of the same god. Christians follow the life and teachings of Jesus and believe that he is the son of God and the Messiah that the Hebrew Bible said would come. They believe that God sent his son as a sacrifice to save humanity from sin and as a result they could be offered a place in heaven. Customs and traditions among Christians vary depending on which denomination they belong to. However, there are some fundamental practices that all Christians participate in.
