Clancy VY200 Spring 2014 Section 07 Comparison between the Function of Chinese and Western University University represents the highest level of education. Millions of high-school students get prepared for College Entrance Exam to get involved in a better university every year in China. In America, many students also take SAT to be admitted to their favorite college. However, more and more researches show that there is an increasing number of Chinese students who would like to go to universities in western countries to study for their bachelor, master or doctor degree. Researches have founded that “China has become the world’s largest source of overseas students” and “90 percent of that coming after 2000” (Wang). So what is the difference between Chinese and western university that causes this trend? One of the main reasons is that the focus of the university, or what Alfred North Whitehead called “university function” (1), is different from east to west. In this essay, I am going to talk about three aspects of the main differences: teaching method, theoretical application of practical problems, and connection between society and university. The difference of teaching method is the most significant gap between Chinese and western universities. One of the contradictions in teaching method in China is the “stick to book” learning style. Chinese professors are good at teaching the knowledge on the book. They would like to emphasize which kind of problem is most likely to appear on the final exam that you should pay attention to. From their perspective, the ability to solve the problems on the test paper may seems to be best way to judge the learning capacity of the student and what level they have reached.
