Both stories discuss the theme of gender roles and marriage in the era that they live in. These two literary pieces also show how times are changing from decade to decade. In my reading of this story it is focusing on the marriage between Jeanne and Henri in “I’m Going” by Bernard and the marriage between Mr. and Mrs. Mitty in “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” by Thurber. For example in the story of "I'm Going," by Bernard, women were looked at like a piece of property. Where in the story, "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty,” a woman was not looked as a piece of property but they were more excepting and viewed as an equal to men.
In contrast Intimacy by Hanif Kureshi looks at in detail the stream of consciousness of the character Jay. Jay is a sex obsessed character and longs for his wife’s’ affection, that his wife is not interested in. There is only one main event in Intimacy, which I will explore later in the structure. The author’s perceptions of narrative voice are essential to the way that we view the characters. The narrative voice defines whether the reader should have an emotional response to the narrative voice or not.
To what extent does Changez’s failed relationship with Erica mirror his relationship with America? Through his novel The Reluctant Fundamentalist, author Mohsin Hamid provides readers with two unique tales of a man’s relationship with a country and a woman, and shows them both crumble as though mirroring one another. This ‘mirror image’ becomes evident as each relationship passes through three significant stages. In the beginning, Changez is extremely happy to be living his American dream and is subsequently quite pleased with his budding relationship with Erica, however, as time progresses Erica is taken by a nostalgia in the same way America is. Moreover, both relationships Changez holds reach an end at the same place and time by means of a series of epiphanies.

OPPRESSION There are many different types of marriages that men and women can take part in which may have according gender roles which can lead to women having either agency or oppression. In Marji Satrapi’s graphic novel Embroideries, she contrasts the traditional and modern view of marriage via a conversation of women from different ages-each seeing marriage as a way to gain agency or a way to contribute to the oppression of Iranian women. In Juliet Williams’ Unholy Matrimony? She depicts a very analytical view of an Iranian custom of temporary marriage, sigheh and the ways in which it can empower women or oppress women, depending on the type of marriage and the time it takes place.
Devotion vs. Forbidden Love Jane Doe Introduction to Literature Instructor March 9, 2013 Devotion vs. Forbidden Love When is comes to literary writings, many writers express their view on relationships from many different cultures and this is what the writers try to portray in their stories. We are going to analyze two different writings “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant and “Country Lovers” by Nadine Gordimer, focus on two completely different types of relationships in completely different times and places, but show that the couples in both stories want to be in love. The short story “The Necklace” that was written by Guy de Maupassant that was a French author of the naturalistic school who is generally considered the greatest French short story writer.
By the end of this play, we see how Nora’s secret changes the relationship between the couple, as she violates the stereotypical role-play as a wife and mother in her era, which generates her inspirational growth. Nora, the main character, was first introduced as a very sheltered, immature, and optimistic woman. Helmer we see as proud of his male role in society and in the household, father-like towards his wife, and greatly cares for his appearance in others eyes. When speaking to each other, Helmer communicates to Nora as if she was his child instead of his wife. He does this by things such as calling her nicknames with negative characteristics, such as his little lark, spendthrift and featherhead.
Thus, the thoughts and behaviors of both Ms. Loisel and Ms. Mallard should not be surprising considering the era in which these stories were written. Nineteenth Century Women: Trapped, Limited and Restricted The idea that marriage is governed by male perennial authority that is better, simply because they define an unchanging aspect of society, is a consistent theme often hidden throughout each story. In “The Necklace”, Monsieur Loisel makes it his obligation to make his wife happy. The reader is first introduced to him when he comes home with an invitation to a grand social event and anticipates that this will please his wife. He continues this pattern when he acquiesces to her demand for a party dress that they cannot afford.
It is only when one hears pet names from someone one does not love that they are condescending, and until the climax of the play, Nora genuinely loves Torvald. We know this because she saves her husband’s life with a morally questionable act. This act may have ultimately led to the undoing of the marriage, but she does it “out of love” (209) nonetheless. Nora feels that Torvald has been kind to her, and she “thought it was fun when [Torvald] played with [her]” (249). And play they do.
Although sex is still a factor in this situation, the men have to earn it which in the long run makes the man a better more understanding person. Sex then becomes mutual, and true love is formed between the man and woman. With that understanding of love in romantic comedies, it is easier to point out some of the trends that lead to the overall true love within in storeis and movies that use romantic comedy elements. In romantic comedies, the man and woman that end up falling in love meet one another, usually go through an anxiety that pushes them apart, followed by an outside source saying something about the possible companion that further pushes them apart, followed by the male usually performing a service for the woman to get him noticed as well as try to establish a true relationship, and ending with the man and woman together in marriage. These elements can be easily observed in stories such as Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, Bridget Jones’s Diary directed by Sharon Maguire, as well as endless movies and novels.
