The characters Montresor and Zaroff have many similarities. One thing they have in common is their personality. Motivation also serves as a common point for their similarities. Lastly, how Montresor and Zaroff view the world is another similarity. Montresor and Zaroff have a lot in common. Both Montresor and Zaroff have similar personalities. One characteristic they have in common is that they are two-faced. In “Cask of Amontillado,” Montresor acts like Fortunato’s friend. He pretends to care for Fortunato’s health, and when Montresor has Fortunato in the right spot, he goes for the kill. The character, Zaroff, in “The Dangerous Game” treats his guests well. When they first meet, Zaroff gives them food and a good rest. Then he invites the guest to a game, which is when Zaroff begins to hunt. Also, Zaroff and Montresor are clever. Montresor knew to find Fortunato drunk during carnival season. Montresor uses reverse psychology to get Fortunato to go with him. The way Zaroff plays his game is clever. He plans his island out, and knows how to prepare his prey for the hunt. Finally, both men are rich. Montresor lives in a large house and has servants. Underneath his house is a wine cellar. Zaroff owns an island and lives in a chateau. He has Ivan as his servant. Simply put, personality is one of many that the two characters have in common. Another similarity between Zaroff and Montresor is their motivation for violence. Greed plays a key role for their motivation. Montresor wants Fortunato dead. He hates Fortunato so much, that he wants to kill him. Zaroff wants to hunt. His love for hunting keeps him looking for a good prey. Another reason for motivation is because they are bored and tired.
