Compare Wollstonecraft with Tweedy. Compare the ideas presented. Mary Wollstonecraft 1759-1797; she was an 18th century writer. 20th and 21st century feminists saw Wollstonecraft as a key figure in the feminist tradition. Jill Tweedy 1932- 1993 was also an influential feminist writer. Wollstonecraft’s polemic, ‘A Vindication of the Rights of Women’ and Tweedy’s ‘In the Name of Love’. Both these extracts show how these female writers can write from both genders; female and male. They can bring across different views and thoughts throughout their extracts. A Vindication of the Rights of Women’ is an early example of a feminist outlook; Wollstonecraft aims to define, establish and defend equal political, economic, and social rights and equal opportunities for women. In this extract, Wollstonecraft “speaks of passion”; she believes that women were not given the right choices; they were not educated to the full. This affects their choices and they don’t have the full knowledge that they should have been provided with. Jill tweedy was also a feminist writer, who had a balanced view of the relationships between men and women. She believed that women should be equal to men in relationships. Although Wollstonecraft had an idealistic view of marriage, Tweedy reinforces how marriage is far different from the ideas that we have. She describes elements of love which prevent true reality of what is being seen. Wollstonecraft gives the advice to women readers that they should consider their choices; is having a husband the right choice? Or is a lover better? Throughout the extract she compares having a husband with a lover. She talks about a lover being passionate and exciting, while a husband does seem this at the start but the “wise and virtuous” characteristics doesn’t remain.
