Ignoring the reality of everyday life and how it works can obsure individuals perspective of the world, which has devastating effects, such as not being able to understand what it best for ones self in life. In ‘Paul’s Case’ by Willa Cather, the protagonist, Paul, experiences these devastating effects. In order to escape the misery of his everyday life, Paul ignores reality and devises an affluent life for himself, however it is these illogical measures that ultimately cause him to make irrational and harsh decisions that prevent him from securing self-fulfillment. Mayella is rarely explained through out the novel so her background is kept short and simple, however you can see the great affect of not having a mother around has on her. Mayella consequence from not being vocal and telling the truth in To Kill a Mockingbird is one of personal growth. She does not learn how to take ownership for her actions neither does she learns how to stand up against her father. I believe that when they first got married there was some kind of love in their relationship, but when they realized they could not conceive a child Don Elias blamed his wife. Even though it was most likely he was the infertile one, he treated her as if all she was good for was to take care of him like a maid. This is what made her a hard, bitter old woman. Dona Matilida believes it was her fault, and feels guilty about not being able to provide him with a child he so greatly desired. This caused her to turn a blind eye to what he was doing around town with other women.
Both of these characters’ greed and lack of communication is what ultimately lead to the failure of their plans for a quick buck. Jerry is in quite the financial situation due to undisclosed issues, and is in need of a healthy sum to get out of his rut. Since he is already in a heaping amount of debt and his greed leads him to want it quick and easy, but he sees no way of doing that legally. As a lowly car salesman, “he assumes the pose of criminal mastermind, a mismatch that initiates a series of violent acts” (Gaughran 232). Since Jerry really has no idea what he’s doing, he foolishly leaves it in the hands of the two hit men to take care of it.
Once in home again his wife serves him food with a resentful face, meaning she was hurt, which adds to my opinion in why we are not prepared to listen to the truth and it can hurt as much as lying, because she thought her cooking skills were good and now his husband sincerely tells her that in fact she can’t cook for good, leaving her sad, angry and
Curley’s wife lived not only through the sexiest society which rejected her but her husband did not love her at all making her become “… a tart… with the eye,”(Steinbeck14). That is the image that the men have of Curley’s wife because they are ignorant and do not understand that all she is searching for is to have someone to talk to. Curley’s wife’s loneliness led her to have a bad image with the men on the ranch but also made her seek for attention in anybody she did not matter who. For example she would talk to Candy, and old lifeless man, Crooks who is a Negro that is physically disabled, and Lennie who is a huge man that is mentally retarded. She became mean too since she was lonely and the men rejected her.
The unequal distribution of domestic responsibilities has held women back for generations; it still today continues to hinder women’s progression in the work-place. It seems like everyone thinks mum will stay at home and do the dishes, her little boy will grow up to become a big, strong man but not her daughter, of course, she is far too busy washing her own children’s dishes. But it is not just women who suffer sexism, men do also. For example: Shelia’s Wheels sell cheaper car insurance to women only, and they say it's because statistics show women to be safer drivers. Would it would be fair for a bank to offer men better rates on loans if stats showed that men were better at paying back loans than women were, utterly ludicrous.
She is forced to stay in the house by her controlling husband Curley. Curley is insecure about his relationship with his wife, which causes him to be controlling, jealous, and mean. Curley’s wife uses flirting with the workers on the ranch as one way to help with her loneliness. She sees that Lennie is simple minded and so she feels that he is the only one she can talk about her problems with. She feels that no one else listens.
After giving up her dream of being an actress, she settles down with a man she doesn’t even like and begins to wallow in her dissatisfaction with the choices she has made. “’I ain’t used to livin’ like this. I coulda made somethin’ of myself’” (88), she says. Curley’s attitude toward his wife and the other men on the ranch worsens as time goes by, driving the woman away. She wanders from building to building claiming that she’s looking for Curley, when she actually just wants to have a conversation with anyone.
The relationship between Curley and his wife is another element that fuels his hostility throughout the novel. “He spends half the time looking for her and the rest of the time she’s looking for him.” This tells us that their relationship isn’t very stable. It also hints at the fact that because Curley’s wife gives some workers on the ranch ‘the eye’ he is quite paranoid that she’ll cheat, thus one of the reasons he’s always asking Slim about her whereabouts. The other reason being that because in those days women were meant to stay at home to cook, clean and look after the house in general; Curley didn’t like it that his wife didn’t do any that and instead hung around the ranch all the time and his American dream was coming crashing down. The American dream was the hope to have a housewife, a piece of land and your own home something that just wasn’t working out for
