Compare how the writers present evil and villainy in Macbeth and the strange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. The author of the strange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is called Robert Louis Stevenson. Stevenson’s novel adds some aspects of madness and mystery though mostly evil and villainy which was in Shakespeare’s Macbeth. These themes are the same in Shakespeare’s Macbeth. In the beginning Macbeth was a good hero however he became overly ambition as a result of the three witches’ prophecy. He doesn’t switch between good and evil like Dr Jekyll however he becomes more evil as the play progressed. Macbeth is nicknamed "Black Macbeth" and this was incarnated evil in the story, "smacking of every sin that has a name". Malcolm, his successor on the throne represented good. The alliterative names Macbeth, Macduff and Malcolm pointed to the potential relation between the dispersed parts of a single unique self, that of man, torn between the forces of good and evil, just as in Dr Jekyll. While Doctor Jekyll or "Je-kill" and Mr "hide”, this is an example of phonics. This also can be associated with Macbeth's rhetoric of desire and, the idea of scientific creation substituted for witchcraft. But the main difference resides in the different ending since in Macbeth, the better self, Malcolm, survives and wins over Macbeth whereas in Stevenson's 19th century novel, the crisis destroys both personalities. At the end of Henry Jekyll’s Full Statement of the Case, Dr Jekyll hint at whether or not Hyde will kill himself before the people of the town kill him first.
