Cinematography of 300 Compared to Gladiator In the films that have to do with the Roman Empire, Spartans, and the Greek Gods and Goddess all end in the lost of the legend. In 300, King Leonidas and a force of 300 men fight the Persians at Thermopylae in 480 B.C. After the three days all of the Spartans laid dead, including the legend Leonidas. Then in Gladiator a Roman general is betrayed and his family murdered by a corrupt prince, he comes to Rome as a gladiator to seek revenge. After getting what he wants, which is to battle the prince, he comes out victorious but dies shortly after from a wound that was suffered in the battle. That general was Maximus. There are multiple ways that the cinematographer can depicts the death of the legend in the movie. Along with how dramatic they can make it. Due to the cinematography techniques of color, angles, and effects the fall of Leonidas, in 300, is more dramatic then the fall of Maximus, in Gladiator. The colors in 300 are dark and somber, where as in Gladiator they are neutral. The grayish green color in 300 pulls out other colors, for example the black of the Persians uniforms is pulled out. It also is a grave contrast to their silver masks. Not only that but it pulls the red of the Spartans capes out and make them vibrant. The use of this color also makes the blood, however little, extremely visible. On the other hand, in Gladiator there is no use of contrasting colors, thus making the scene action focused. The colors do not bounce off of one another and nothing really jumps out at viewers. In 300 the angles are more intense then those in Gladiator. 300 uses multiple camera angels such as close ups and medium length shots. The timing and way the angles are used draws the audience in to the scene, at times making it as if they are one of the Spartans. The most intense medium shot used when
