Intro to Research Writing, 12:00 22 February 2013 Single Source Essay In his essay The College Dropout Boom, Dave Leonhardt describes “one of the largest and fastest-growing groups of young adults in America” (266); college dropouts. His implied thesis for this essay is that even though student body populations are becoming more diverse in terms of both ethnic background and social class, there is a large difference in the number of college graduates from higher-income families (upper middle-class and above) and lower-income families. Leonhardt believes that today more than ever before in our nation, high school graduates from lower-income families have the opportunity to attend college, but these students for various reasons are not seeing college through to graduation. He believes that this is a major issue for modern society, and it is being overlooked. Although it seems that we are making great strides in education with increased admissions for college students in diverse social, income and ethnic groups, that because these students are not getting degrees the gap between rich and poor continues to increase, and these achievements in education are not as valid as they seem.

This act provided assistance from the federal government for vocational programs at the college level, making college much more accessible to the population of a growing nation. Its emphasis on applied science provided what was needed for the industrial growth in which America was involved with at the time. I chose this act, which was sponsored by Vermont congressman Justin S. Morrill, because not only was it key in paving the path for career and technical education in colleges on the state level, but its long-term success also led to the eventual inclusion of career and technical programs at the secondary level.

Dai Phan Ann Modzelewski English 101 12/3/14 The various Viewpoints regarding Education funding In the words of Josh Freedman, “higher education is viewed, as great equalizer that leads to social mobility. But selective colleges have long been accused of perpetuating class divides, rather than blurring them” (Freedman 1). Education is a key institution in today’s society. Education since history has been used as the tool for the eradication of poverty that translates to a better future prospect for the students. For many years education was viewed as the greatest equalizer in achieving society’s expectations of life.

At a United Nations Summit recently, global trade was hailed as the reason certain newly industrialized countries such as China has become so forthright and dominant in their advances both economic and social, the following report read, ‘In recent decades, a number of developing countries, most notably the East Asian newly industrializing countries, have been able to purposefully use the elemental force of trade to boost growth and development within a relatively short time span.’ (Puri 2005 cited in UNCTAD 2005 report p.22) But this boost in International Trade has not been without its complications and challenges. With increased competition and the laws behind international trade becoming stricter year by year countries who have only recently found a foothold in the world trading community, are struggling to compete with the more economically developed countries, and are finding their trade links cheapened or cut off completely by the wave of competitors, all trying to stay ahead in these economically turbulent times. This report aims to analyse key trade and development issues facing developing countries today, but also expose the opportunities these countries
Do Asian Students Face Unique Challenges In American College Applications? In the decade, more and more international students are enrolled in American colleges, and many come from Asian countries. As the New York Times reporter Karin Fischer said in her report, the U.S receives a huge number of college applications from South Korea each year. People from there usually want their children to get higher educations from US institutions, even though that means they have to afford the heavy pressure of expensive tuition and difficult tests. However, in the past two years, the application rate of Asian students began falling.
As today, the economy growth in the world is becoming more competitive so a college education is extremely important. In addition, by adopting the importance of college education, there seem to have many opportunities in working life, better social interaction among new friends and ways to lead an independent life for a college student. First, a college education provides a lot of opportunities for a student in their working life, especially for higher paid jobs in their future. David D M (2009) asserts that according to the U.S. Department of Labour, 90 percent of the fastest-growing jobs of the future will require some post-secondary education (Degree) or training. Furthermore, students will get the chances to get a higher paid job in a company if they pursue their studies in a college till a Degree programme is achieved.
