A typical horror film has the same group of characters who are visible throughout the film. The character which is most definitely expected and completes a horror film is an antagonist also known as the villain. This is typical for a horror as someone who scares, kills or commits crime etc. is normally the main focus of the storyline without an antagonist the film would not be classed as a horror as they are an important part with creating the element of fear and vulnerability. For example in Dracula, Count Dracula is the antagonist and In the Devil Rides Out its Mocata.
A horror show will create an uneasy, eerie atmosphere and is intended to frighten watchers. Horrors can include real life situations such as serial killers like in the movie Halloween or purely fictional situations and be based on the paranormal like the show Supernatural. Analysing a scene from Ridley Scott's Alien There are many techniques that contribute to the horror a film can produce in its viewer. One of the proclaimed masters of horror, Sir Alfred Hitchcock believed that to frighten the audience, the director needed to frighten the child inside the viewer (Television interview, 1964). Techniques to make films horrifying have been developing since almost the beginning of film itself (Babbis, 1990). The term 'art horror' can be attributed to a film entirely dedicated to creating that feeling of horror in its viewer (Carroll, 1987). Ridley Scott's Alien released in 1979 is a film that can be categorised as such an art horror.
When you look at a horror film you know their will be gore,violence and most of the characters will not survive till the end of the film. Martin Scorsese is a cinematic auteur because his films represent his personal vision. The film I am critiquing is Goodfellas. Martin Scorsese is the director of this film. Major actors in the film are Robert De Niro,Ray Liotta, and Joe Pesci.

After Bad Taste, Peter Jackson made the movie called Meet The Feebles, there were lots of violence, sexually explicit images, drug dealing, back stabbing, date rape and death involved in this film. Peter Jackson directed, produced and wrote that film. Although not a horror movie more like a horror comedy, Meet the Feebles featured gross-out humour including the use of vomit following the same style of his early Bad Taste. In 1992, he made a film called brain-dead, it was a zombie horror-comedy, following his early works Bad Taste and Meet The Feebles portraying gross-out contents.
Throughout the development of horror cinema – the figure of the ‘vampire’ has changed and progressed dramatically. When thinking of the ‘classic’ figure of the ‘vampire’ – one of the first that comes to the minds of most is none other than Hammers Dracula (Horror of Dracula; 1958). The stereotypical judgments or thoughts towards the ‘classic’ vampire figure – in this case, Dracula – is most notably known to be from Transylvania. He seduces and lures his victims in order to suck blood for survival and also finding pleasure in the process of his kill. Ultimately, Dracula is portrayed as evil, a threat to society and a menace.
When movies made their debute, it was only a matter of time before horror stories were filmed. But since it was the slient era, these movies had to rely on visual appearance, such as shawdows and light. It requrie people to bring these monsters into pysiche form. Some of this was hard to do since the film was black and white. One popular movie was Nosferatu, a film about a vampire.

They also had Bad Company, The Hatchet Man, and City Streets. “The studio had its greatest success with its cycle of classic horror films.”(Dirks) Horror films were one of the first modern horror movies beginning with Dracula. Then other horror movies came along such as Frankenstein and The Mummy which both came out in 1932. Music was another way people got away from the bad times.

Thriller is a genre which gives the audience suspense, tension, and excitement while watching the movie. It tends to be adrenaline rushing, fast paced, gritty, and have an unexpected plot twist.

The demographic of horror films was established as a young to middle class market because the genre refocused the content in the movies. It draws upon unsettling teen issues throughout history.
