Compare and contrast our approach to knowledge of the past with our approach to knowledge of the future. What is knowledge? Oxford American Dictionary defines knowledge in two ways. In the first, knowledge is defined as “facts, information, and skills acquired by a person through experience and education; the theoretical or practical understanding of a subject”. The second defines knowledge in more philosophical terms, “true, justified belief; certain understanding, as opposed to opinion”. But neither of these definitions capture how it is that a society changes over time or through different cultures, the way that it approaches knowledge. We approach this concept of “wisdom” and “knowing” in many different ways. These “approaches” are called ways of knowing. The ways of knowing in which I am familiar with are sense perception, reason, emotion, and language. We use ways of knowing to perceive, understand, and think about the past and the future. There are many similarities and differences in the way we approach the knowledge of the past to the way we approach the knowledge of the future. However, we, as a society, use our current paradigm of knowledge to project the future. We only look at the past through the present. Both the past and present influence the development of the future. The past is the foundation for us to predict the future. The study of history demonstrates that we use history to justify our occupations, desires, and prejudices of the present. Our present fantasies, prejudices determine both our view of the past and our view of the future. People believe that they want to believe, sometime this means perception, instead of knowledge. If we perceive that We are looking to the future to fulfill our present hopes, wishes and paradigms. We primarily use evidence when we approach to knowledge of the past. Evidence in history
