Carlos Pacciulli Assignment 1: Final Draft 02/20/2012 Neddy and Huck take on Society In a novel written by Mark Twain entitled Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, he makes it clear that Huck is a boy who comes from the lowest levels of society. Huckleberry Finn’s father is a drunk and a thug who disappears for months at times. Huck himself is dirty and frequently homeless. In John Cheever's The Swimmer it explains the ways in which life consists of different mental stages and how they each affect the realization of the mind. The protagonist Neddy goes through different swimming pools and this signifies the many different voyages in his life. Huck and Neddy differ in that Huck eventually rejects society while society rejects Neddy, and also how Neddy exists in the past while Huck remains in the present. Huck…show more content…
In comparison to a court decision one cannot use personal feeling towards the final decision in a case, but Huck felt otherwise. Huck is being disciplined for his beliefs and he does not want to be part of a lifestyle that does not support his ways. For example, his choice not to turn in Jim because he knows of what he did shows that Huck understands why Jim is escaping and feels for him rather than just to do the right thing according to society. Huck sees Jim as a friend, a companion whom he finds close not as a slave. With that said he truly is able to see that society's way of treating Jim is completely wrong. Huck states "It was fifteen minutes before I could...humble myself to a nigger; but I warn't ever sorry for it afterward" (Twain 79). Huck has chosen to play a prank on Jim but it has caused him only agony.
