In discussions of health care reform, the United Kingdom system is often held up as a possible model for the United States. The two countries' health care systems are very different. United Kingdom has a single-payer, mostly publicly-funded system, while the United States has a multi-payer, heavily private system-but the countries appear to be culturally similar, suggesting that it might be possible for the United States to adopt the United Kingdom system. I have identified three distinct differences between these two healthcare systems; the cost difference, the level of treatment and finally, patient satisfaction. First of all, between the two Healthcare systems, the most common discussion is that there is a substantial cost difference between the United Kingdom national healthcare system and the United States open market system. In the United Kingdom, the health service is paid for by taxpayers as an additional tax on earnings. This means that everyone can afford and receive the same healthcare regardless of economic status. The most expensive system in the world, the American healthcare system is riddled with problems and contradictions. One could say that this system is a work in progress, driven by interests with two goals that are often contradictory: providing healthcare to the sick, and generating income for the persons and organizations that assume the financial risk. UK patients prefer to be taxed in order to have free point of service healthcare. This system also allows UK pensioners to be able to retire and not have to keep working in order to maintain healthcare. Children’s dental, health and eye sight needs are free unlike the US healthcare, which creates a higher patient satisfaction with the national healthcare
