Compare and Contrast Acoustic and Electric Drums Joe Werner Many people ponder what the difference is between electric drums and acoustic drums. There are many questions, and with them, come many arguments. Each have ways that are both better and worse. The technicality between them reach a point of both conflict and awe, and resolve themselves as equal to an extent. The are many ways acoustic drums are similar and different than electric drums. The first and probably most important aspect to look at when comparing these two, is which sound better. Acoustic drums have that natural feel, and with that comes a beautiful and luscious sound. The many types of wood make acoustic drums have such a remarkable timbre and resonate so perfectly, people wonder how electric drums could possibly recreate this. While electric drums use to sound completely digital, new technology came into view and people found a way to capture the crisp sounds of acoustic drums and transport them into a sound module. The sound module acts as a computer, holding a certain number of banks and different types of not only drum sets, but other percussive instruments. With this advanced sound module, electronic drums became rapidly popular. The sound module in e-drums uses triggers that connect to each drum pad, causing the pad to equal the sound of acoustic. Electric drums can now capture the clarity as well as the delicate sounds that acoustic drums are well known for. Some people however, prefer the sound of electric over acoustic because of the fact that everything is pre-tuned and no extra work is necessary to make your kit sound flawless. Others though, prefer acoustic because of the simple fact that its natural and authentic, and cannot be captured by anything technological.
