Compare and Contrast Essay Have you ever ate pickled pig lips or perhaps a soggy lobster? Many people probably have not. But one thing that the majority of us have experienced is a family tradition or ritual. In the two stories that we will be exploring both authors encounter strong family traditions as well as stepping outside of their own comfort zones. While two stories may have similarities you can guarantee that they will have differences as well. In the story Lobster Lessons by Aleksandra Crapanzano we follow the author, her fiancé and his great aunt Margaret to a small cottage on the coast of Nantucket (Crapanzano 46). Here the author is faced with a difficult situation. Simply put, to show respect and eat or to be rude and not eat. But we will come back to that later. First, I think it is important that you know of great aunt Margaret’s diet or style of eating. Margaret’s breakfast lunch and dinner consisted mostly of boiled and bland foods (Crapanzano 46). We also find out (to the great disappointment of the author) that Margaret likes her lobster boiled for a “… Full 23 minutes – not a second more nor less by the stove top timer…” (48) Which makes the lobster a soggy, slimy morsel. So now that we know Margaret’s style of eating we can return to Aleksandra’s dilemma, to eat or not to eat? She silently and respectfully ate the food (as any decent person would) and buried the memory deep in her mind (Crapanzano 47). Now we’re going to change flights from Nantucket and head down south to Louisiana where we meet John T. Edge, the author of the story I’m Not Leaving Until I Eat This Thing. Edge, like Crapanzano, is faced with the situation to eat or not to eat? However, his experience is largely different because he chose his situation and the decision that followed.
