Compare and contrast various aspects of social and cultural lifestyles in Ireland with that of other European states. In this essay I hope to focus on education and training, living costs, language and food in France and Spain. I hope that this essay may also help me get a clearer understanding of the European Union. France is the largest country in Western Europe and the third largest in Europe as a whole. The language spoken in France is French; a romantic language which originated from Latin. Between the 17th and 20th century, French was introduced to America, Africa, South-East Asia and the Caribbean. The capital of France is Paris and has a population of 60.9 million. Popular food and drinks in France include a variety of starters, main dishes and desserts such as: * Foie Gras - This is the very fatty liver of a goose or duck that has been force fed rich grains. Enjoyed with plain toast or as part of another dish. * Escargots – A dish of cooked land snails. * Confit de Canard - Duck confit is made by cooking the duck in a big pot of duck fat. The result is incredibly moist and flavourful. * Wine The entire population must pay compulsory health insurance. The insurers are non-profit agencies that annually participate in negotiations with the state regarding the overall funding of health care in France. After paying the doctor's or dentist's fee, a proportion is reimbursed. This is around 75 to 80%, but can be as much as 85%. Schooling in France is mandatory as of age 6, the first year of primary school. Many parents start sending their children earlier though, around age 3 as nursery classes are usually affiliated to a borough's primary school.
