Jarod Forsythe Mrs. Castner English 11, period 1 25 February 2013 Comparative Analysis Rubric The Giver by Lois Lowry, Anthem by Ayn Rand, and Fahrenheit 451 by Francois Truffaut are all works of literature that are in quite different time periods and have the people in them have different lifestyles than ours. In the three pieces there are many similarities and differences in the way the authors portray the rules and lifestyles of those in their book’s societies. In each piece there are some different ways of transportation. In The Giver the people in the society own bicycles and there are signs of different aircraft. In Anthem it seems the main mode of transportation is walking, the main character stumbles upon an old subway tunnel that has been completely forgotten about by the society. In Fahrenheit 451 the town’s people use bikes, the train, and there are a few cars that are seen in the movie. In each of the societies there are some unique rules the town’s people must obey. In The Giver one must not lie and they must take pills to stop their hormones. In Anthem the people in the society are not allowed to use the word “I”, they are not allowed to wright, they must do everything for one another and not for themselves and they are not allowed to speak of time before the rebirth. In Fahrenheit 451 the people in the society are not allowed to own or read books. These pieces all have about the same type of ending. They all have a happy ending where the main character breaks away from their society and finds happiness elsewhere. In The Giver the main character leaves his society and finds the other society he has heard about where they have Christmas, singing, can see in color and other things they’re not able to do in his old society. In Anthem the main character runs away and starts his own society. In Fahrenheit 451 the main character runs away to a different
