Community Service Graduation Requirement

The Columbus area high schools should implement a community service component to the graduation requirement.   Throughout our nation, many communities are implementing this type of high school graduation requirement. Even in their first years they are obtaining phenomenal results.   In 1999, 64% of all high schools throughout the United States encouraged some type of organized community service for their students.   In some of the biggest cities, like Chicago and Detroit, service learning requirements for graduation have increased more than 15% per year for the last three years (“Youth Attitudes”). It has been estimated that over 300 million hours of community service time have been donated to civic groups just this past year as a result of the newly implemented graduation requirements. Community service has an economic value of over $2 billion dollars to the nation, proving that the country benefits by having young people involved in community service. Because of the benefits of community service, high school students must be required to complete a minimum of fifty hours of community service to graduate.
Not only do civic groups benefit from community service but the educators of the students serving, also benefit. Early research by the W. K. Kellogg Foundation has identified that involvement in community service not only improves the students’ attitudes about serving their community, but also reduces risky behaviors while improving the students’ test scores and their individual self esteem (Myers).   Recent Presidents, Bill Clinton and George Bush, have actively supported and funded efforts to improve access to service learning opportunities like the Freedom Corps and Teach for America.   When President-elect Barack Obama came to Columbus East High School last spring, he indicated that by becoming involved in community service projects as a student he was able to feel an inner strength that empowered him to improve his...
