Ruth Degraff-Leon 11/09/12 Community Service Hours Essay Community Service is important for many reasons. Taking part and volunteering teaches compassion and understanding. One of my favorite things about community service is that there are opportunities and choices right in your very neighborhood. You can volunteer for something you really believe and have an interest in, and can volunteer as much or as little as you'd like or have time for. My volunteering took places at games like football basketball, soccer, and so much more. I choose to volunteer for that because I couldn’t be involved in sports because I had a heart problem which caused me to get dizzy and short of breathe. So I became a trainer my sophomore year in high school around the month of May 2011 and from there I enjoy helping out the players that needed help with any cuts or bruises, needed stretches, massages, or exercises. I felt like a doctor at some point that even helped me to figure out what I wanted to be in life. At the games, I would have to pay close attention because anything could happen at any point of time. For example, if a player injured their ankle I would have to pick them up and put them on the sideline to get treated. Even with a cramp they would have to walk off the field or court with their toes point and drinking either Gatorade or pickle juice. But of course the head trainer would have to be their because we weren’t certified trainer so we were limited to do certain things when it comes down to certain injures. Being a trainer showed me that certain players are in sports to stay out of trouble or to get scholarships to get out the street life. I don’t only treat them but I also give them a word of encouragement because when they make one little mistake they tend to give up.
