Community Problem-Solving CJA/454 Criminal Justice Administration University of Phoenix Community Problem-Solving Problem in communities is seen around cities in the United States. Some problems are worst than others with crime rates pertaining to murder, rape, gang related crimes, and illegal drugs. Other crimes are also causing problems in communities, which has made law enforcement officials to take action. Police department s are working with communities leaders in a solution in areas where crime has taken over and putting fear to people. Police departments spend time and money in forming programs and groups to assist in these types of problems. Therefore, community –policing is an initiative that police departments focus on to find solutions to problems in communities such as crime. The Denton Police Department in TX, created an initiative called CamStat Service Delivery, which was created by Charles Wiley, Chief of police, and Timothy smith, assistance to the chief of information Technology. The Denton Police Deportment created CamStat based on the same CamStat model in New York City, which cameras are put in Times Square because of complaints of noise, graffiti, litter, broken windows, peep shows, and abandoned properties. This initiative by the New York Police began to reduce those crimes and more serious crime. The main focus from the CamStat initiative and other programs is to prevent the broken window theory, which explains if a problem is ignored, the problem will get worse. Broken window theory: The central theme of broken windows theory holds that when neighborhoods appear to be broken down, disordered, and generally unfriendly, they serve as a magnet to delinquent behavior and crime.
