Knowing who you have patrolling the streets and protecting the public is very important. Training needs to be another tool used to reduce police violence. As a military police officer we were trained on the basics, how to handle a weapon and riots but never on police brutality. Police officers should have to go through mandatory situations or issues that they would encounter in real life working for the police department. Training is a very positive and educational way to raise awareness and knowledge.
If police want to gain the respect of their community, they must respect all of the different cultures in the neighborhoods they are working in. If officers refuse to respect these people, this can end up leading to distrust in any police force, the loss of credibility, and the inability to be able to work together effectively. In order to learn from past mistakes in community policing, they must examine their past mistakes and correct
Ethnicity and the Police By CJA344 The police department is leaving a bad impression in many minority communities, because of the corruption and brutality that comes from the police patrolling the areas. The police should leave a positive impression with the communities that they serve, this way the police will be able to ask the community for help when needed. There are a few people in the community that speak highly of the police because they have good experiences with the police and have positive opinions of the police and are more freely to cooperate with the police department. Lack of community support to the police force can lead to more crimes in the communities, as a result of the community the police can be less likely to work up to their full potential. “When crime rate goes up there is a further dip in the public perception of the police resulting in a greater antagonism towards the police on the part of the public “(1985).
The use of police force is highly important and can make a huge difference in society. It can make an impact and affect the outcome of a situation. There are people that like the police and there are people who hate them. Regardless of what your opinion is about the use of police force, one should take into account that it is much needed. Police force protects our rights as citizens, enforces the law, and it helps shape a society to make moral and ethical decisions.
Responsibilities of a police officer are varied, and may differ greatly from within one political context to another. Typical duties relate to keeping the peace, law enforcement, protection of persons and property, and the investigation of crimes. Officers are expected to respond to a variety of situations that may arise. Discuss the problems and successes associated with recruitment of new law enforcement officers? Police departments are making efforts to better reflect the communities they serve.
Communication will also help us in understanding the demands and stress that officer’s deal with everyday and in turn come up with a solution in easing their stress. Finding ways to ease the stress of officers will solve the major issue of police brutality. According to Berko, steps that apply to decision making must be made we must first think, next analyze reasoning, and third reach the decision. The decision must be a mutual one in order to result in peace amongst the
Because the overall objective of Restorative justice is to involve all stakeholders, it requires the assumption that crimes or violations are committed against real individuals, rather than against the state. It serves as an advocate’s restitution to the victim by the offender rather than retribution by the state against the offender. Instead of continuing and escalating the cycle of violence, it tries to restore relationships and stop the violence. Victims’ respond to this as a need because it helps them feel what they want to feel most and that’s safe. Some of the most important components a victim needs and desires are to feel safe, to have support and most importantly to have a voice.
Relationship between Private and Public Police Public police are overwhelmed; they cannot possibly protect everyone, and respond to every call in a timely manner. Private police can fill in the gaps that the public police leave, they can also do things that the public police cannot and they are not bound by the same rules. Can the public and private police have a working relationship? In most cases the relationship between public and private police is strained, to say the least. Three studies have been conducted since 1971 to determine what can be done to fix the relationship between the two (Clifford, 2004).
Law enforcement officers need to uphold the law in order to enforce it, so police officers must have a strong sense of right and wrong and they must generally exhibit and encourage good behavior to the public. This sense of right and wrong and the desire to do good in the community is perhaps the most important trait a police officer needs to have. Police officers often find themselves in high-stress, volatile situations. At the other end of the spectrum, they deal with a lot of mundane, routine patrols. They deal with dishonest and dangerous people, and also victimized and abused people.
The police are occasionally called upon to force unpopular laws while attempting to foster or maintain public support (Wrobleski & Hess, 2006).” How the police balance these concerns often determines the quality of the relationship that they have with the public. The actions of individual police officers (the use of excessive force), or policies enacted by a department that emphasize the coercive legal authority of the police (zero tolerance policing) may jeopardize public satisfaction. In addition, “the quality of police and community relations often contributes to the ability of the police to accomplish goals of public safety (Wrobleski & Hess, 2006).” When the public is satisfied with and has confidence in the police, they are more likely to contribute information that may assist the police in solving crimes. When community residents trust the police, they are more willing to work collaboratively with the police to make improvements to neighborhoods. Therefore, there are very real and
