On Sept. 22, 2012, I had the opportunity to interview Richard at Community Fire Department in MI. Because of schedule conflicts, it took a while for us to finally sit down and talk. I asked him some questions that would give me an insight into what he deals with on a daily basis. Some questions were personal in nature, but were asked for a deeper understanding of what makes a good man as well as a good chief. I arrived at the station and entered into the downstairs meeting room. After the initial chat, I read Rich my reason for choosing him for this project and explained the final outcome. I started out with general questions. Tell me why you decided to get into the fire service. “We did not have fire protection in my county while growing up. My house caught on fire when I was younger, and my dad told me to get out of the house.” “When I ran outside, I saw neighbors running towards my house with milk buckets and fire extinguishers.” There were no fire departments close to you? “No, Lake City fire came,…it wasn’t their area,…show more content…
“Guy to blame.” “Responsible for safety of everyone, responsible to make sure everyone has training to give the public the best service possible. Responsible to make sure old/new guys succeed. Responsible for setting attitude of coroporation and professionalism of the department.” “Make everyone believe in themselves, inspire others, and inspire everyone here to be less than satisfied for “good enough”. “I need to know where people are and be there with them. (mentally mostly). Do what I expect others to do.” How many years of experience do you think someone should have before thinking about becoming a fire chief? “As a volunteer there is many personal variables. 8-10 years due to lower run volume than fulltime and we mostly all have jobs that make it difficult for us to get all the required classes. It will really take 3-5 with a good dynamic chief to learn from, to start to understand
