It is evident that Tan’s mother is considered by the society as inferior because of her broken English. Even her daughter was first ashamed of her due to the fact that she cannot speak good English that is understood by many people in the society. However, the significance of “Mother Tongue” in our lives is the overriding theme in the article. From the beginning, Tan struggles with her two different worlds. Being born in China but living in America, she seems ashamed of her roots and that is why she is embarrassed when her mother speaks broken English (Tan 142-146).
Unbound Feet The immigration of Chinese women was one of the most overlooked and understudied significant event in women’s history, until now. Their rise from being considered slaves, to gaining respect and credibility, is one of the most influential for women’s equality across America. In Unbound Feet, Judy Yung examines the hardships and rise of Chinese women as they immigrate to America to fulfill their dreams, yet are bound by discrimination and bind together to rise above racism and sexism in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Yung examines the immigration and rise of the culture in five decades. Yung asks herself “What sociohistorical forces were at play that can explain social change for Chinese American women in the first half of the twentieth century?” (Yung, 5) The book tells of their oppression in America through prostitution, gender roles, anti-Chinese immigration laws, and class discrimination.
As Kim mentioned ”poverty with a rich girl habits and memory”, it was referred to the difficulty during her transition from Korea to the U.S. In addition, English as a second language was her second difficulty. From very rich family, her mom who used to be a society lady now had to work as a fish filleter at a market. In Kim’s opinion, the sudden changing of their social status was totally devastating for the whole family. They lost all financial security and also Kim had no more private tutors and help assistant.
She is leading mass movement in her country and around the world called Young Girls Transformation Project. She is unlocking the commitment of young girls that want to make a change in their life. She was once a young African girl who never thought she would make it to college. Leymah is a woman that is very similar to young women of today’s generation. She believes providing you with education will give young woman a better life.
In Alice’s case, her characteristics and values have been drastically influenced by what her family has been through in the past. An example of the influence of past lives on the behaviors of family members is the relationship between Alice’s mother and her grandmother. There is great conflict between the two of them during Alice’s childhood because her grandmother has such high expectations of Alice’s mother that she finds difficult to fulfill. Alice’s grandmother is an old fashioned Chinese woman, who believes that the wife of the house must bring honor to her family by perfecting all domestic duties. Juggling four children, cooking, cleaning and adjusting to a new society puts pressure on Alice’s mother.
One statistic that stuck out was that one-quarter of 14 to 17 year olds of both sexes received or sent naked pictures of themselves or someone else. Another stated that half of 3 to 6 year old girls are afraid that they are fat. Girls these ages should not be doing or worry about things like that. Hane’s also point out many other studies, examples of people’s personal experiences, and different professors. She also broke up the subjects she wanted to talk about and used subtitles to let us know what the reading would say next.
However, her mother thought of her daughter as a failure and they did not get along very well. The parable connects to this chapter because in both the mothers came to America for a better life for their children but it did not turn out how they wanted it to. Scar is about a girl who is raised by her grandmother, brother, aunt, and uncle. Her father died and her mother was a dishonor to the family who left An-mei when she was a little girl. Her mother became a polygamist in China and therefore disgraced herself.
Sexism Sexism caused a lot of problems in history. For example during the industrial revolution women are prevented to have a job that is paid equally as a man does although they do more work than a men does, and this lead to women rights movement. In ancient China women were not allow to go out they couldn’t have a job all they do is stay at home and do housework. It’s not really because their religion didn’t allow them. It’s because Chinese people think after women get married they will live with their husband and they will become a part of the other family.
