Community Development. Task 1A Discuss and evaluate the differences between ‘Community, Community work and Community Development. Community. Community is defined in the dictionary as: ‘A social group of any size whose members reside in a specific locality, share government and often have a common cultural and historical heritage’. While attending the HND summer school I can now understand this definition as both sections of the community in Northern Ireland are set in their ways with culture and historical attitudes. Northern Ireland has witnessed a very brutal and fatal conflict which has divided the catholic and protestant communities. The Nationalist community believe they were right to defend their community from attacks from the Loyalist community and the feeling is matched from the Loyalist community. This conflict has brought about a very bitter community, however people from all sides are working very hard to bring both communities together so they can work, socialise and live in peaceful times. Education is the main way to achieving this integrated schooling is now a common way to educate children. To educate children from a young age will help to eradicate the problems of bigotry and secterisim and show people we can all be accepted. Just recently the Queen came to Belfast for her Jubilee celebrations elected members of Stormount were invited to meet the Queen however Sinn Fein’s Martin McGuinness was being watched closely to see if he shook her hand. Ulster Defence Association’s Jackie Mc Donald saw this as a symbolic gesture as many years ago this would not have been accepted. Martin McGuinness is now the Deputy First Minister in Stormount working alongside Peter Robinson who is First Minister and represents the Democratic Unionist Party and the protestant people.
