Community Can Have Negative and Positive Influences

Georgia has one of the lowest graduation rates in the country. In fact, Georgia is in the bottom five states. I live in Stone Mountain Georgia. I can often hear the roaring of the trains and never ending cars drive past. In my community, most people are middle class and work minimum paying jobs. It is full of four bedroom houses, barking dogs and noisy neighbors. My community can have negative and positive influences. I realized that the lack of positive role models, diversity and judgmental people in my community, influences me greatly and impact my life daily. A role model is anyone who possess the qualities that we would like to have and affected us in a way that makes us want to be better people. Role models are needed because they guide us in our development stages of life and more so, they help us make meaningful decisions. Many children grow up imitating their role model's behavior, for example, if they see their role model smoking, then they are likely to smoke. In my community not many people I know, including myself, have a role model. I feel like my community needs more positive adult figures to look up to. The nonexistence of role models effected me both negative and positively. I feel like if I had a role model, I would have my priorities in order and have someone to help me. At the same time not having a role model made me more independent. There is an immense amount of diversity in my community. My next door neighbors are African, Hispanic and Jamaican. Being around many different backgrounds exposed me to different cultures, people and languages. Skin color, nationality, heredity, religion, and language have divided people in different ways and different degrees. My community help me realize the singular ways people choose to live.
