Introduction The twenty-first century has brought with it profound challenges to the nature, values, and control of higher education in the United States, and in community colleges in particular. Societal expectations and public resources for higher education are undergoing fundamental shifts. Changes both within and outside the academy are altering its character – its students, faculty, governance, curriculum, functions, and very place in society. Leadership is an important resource in improving our community colleges. Leaders have a vision, take initiative, influence people, make proposals, solve problems, follow-up, and, most of all, take responsibility (Argosy, 2010). The purpose of this paper is to identify an issue in my community that can be addressed with the aid of your local community college. This paper will next put together a broad-based team that I will lead to develop a plan for addressing the issue. In doing so this paper will outline the team members, their roles, their skill sets, how they will reflect the community, how they support each other and how I will ensure buy-in by all team members. The Issue Identifying an issue in my community that can be addressed with aid of my local community college was not hard to find. It is overly obvious the issues faced by the youth in my community, that issue is lack of knowledge creating a deficit of opportunity. The problem explains the rationale for engaging in a strategic plan with an effective team. The lack of exposure to the benefits of higher education and the deficit opportunity this lack of exposure creates for students in inner city schools is disgraceful. They are not effectively made knowledgeable, or properly counseled, to the benefits of pursuing a higher education.
