Town of Islip The town of Islip is located on the south shore of Long Island. Islip once had a population of 1,145 in the year 1820, since then it has grown to a community where there are over 335,000 residents that are living and working. Islip used to be a plantation, over the years it evolved to an area known for fishing and tourism. "On November 29, 1683, William Nicoll became the first patentee of Islip when he purchased land from Sachem (Chief) Winnequaheagh of Connetquot. He named his 500,000 acre plantation Islip Grange, in honor of the town from which he emigrated: Islip, England."(Town of Islip) The original settlement of Islip included the towns of Bohemia, Brentwood, Bayport, Central Islip, East Islip, Hauppauge, Holbrook, Great River, Oakdale, Sayville, West Sayville and part of Ronkonkoma. Since the town of Islip was so close to the water, the Great South Bay provided a way of life with fishing. The water was so accessible, tourists build vacation homes to enjoy the seaside community. Today household incomes for the town of Islip range from $100,000- $149,999 range which account for 23% of the households. 17.9% make between $50,000 and $74,999. The median household income is $84,584. (American Fact Finder) Our of all the households, only 5.6% fall below poverty. Population wise there are 161,263 males and 164,179 females according to Epodunk.com. The majority of household members are between the ages of 25-44, with an average age of 37.6. Ethnicities are as follows 259,113 Caucasian, 33,030 African American, Hispanic and Latino are 77,797. (Epodunk).
