Community Description and Data Interpretation Montgomery County is a county in the state of Maryland, located just to the northwest of nation’s capital. Established in 1776, Montgomery County was named after Richard Montgomery (1738-1775), a Revolutionary War General. (Montgomery County, Maryland, 2013) According to the U. S. Census Bureau, it has a total area of 507 square miles, with 495 square miles of land area and 12 square miles of water area. The population density was 1,978.2 persons per square mile. (U.S. Department of Commerce, 2013a) It has four distinct seasons, including hot summers and chilly winters. The mean annual temperature is 54.6 °F. (Montgomery County Weather, 2013) Population/Economic Assessment As of 2012, there were 1,004,709 people residing in the county, of which 63.2% were White, 18.3% were Black or African American, 17.9% Hispanic or Latino and 14.7% Asian. There were slightly more females (51.8%) than males (48.2%). Persons under the age of 18 account 23.5% of County’s residents, with 6.5% of those are under 5 years old. The senior population (aged 65 years and over) represents 12.9% of the County population. (U.S. Department of Commerce, 2013a) It is expected the overall senior people of Montgomery County will increase by 52.6% from 2015 to 2030. (U.S. Department of Commerce, 2012) In 2012, Montgomery County was ranked as the 11th richest county in terms of median household income in the United States and the second richest out of 24 counties in the State of Maryland. (List of highest-income counties in the United States, 2013) The median household income in 2008-2012 was $96,985 (U.S. Department of Commerce, 2013a) versus $53,046 for the nation (U.S. Department of Commerce, 2013b) and $72,999 for the state.
