It is a process by which two or more people exchange ideas, facts, feelings or impressions in ways that each gains a common understanding of the message. We need to build relationships with the service users that we work with, their families and our colleagues to enable us to work effectively. Relationships and communication skills are closely linked, as good communication will help to build good relationships. Relationships are influenced by the way we communicate this not only includes the language we use and how we listen to others but also our body language, gestures and facial expressions. If we do not communicate well with either a colleague or service user this could affect the way we work, as it could cause an atmosphere or tension in the work environment.
Service users are more likely to confide in carers which they trust and therefore will help to build their working professional relationship. Aiii Identify three ways of finding out the communication and language needs of an individual. For each method, describe how effective it is at establishing the needs of the individual. Asking the individual - this would enable me to identify if the individual is hard of hearing and also if they understand the language in which I am asking. This is probably the best way of establishing their communication needs as I will be able to gain an immediate understanding.

These are as follows: • People communicate in order to give or provide information, for instance to be able to share important information so that people can work and function together in a sufficient way • People communicate to seek information, by asking questions to someone who has more knowledge of the subject. • People communicate to express their emotions like courage or fear, joy or sorrow, satisfaction or disappointment with appropriate gestures and words. • People communicate to pass on the knowledge and to teach.
I recognize the importance of all of the theories and theorists discussed, and I was able to relate to some more than others. I was able to develop my own personal, intervention theory based on cognitive and multicultural approaches to therapy. My personal intervention theory, along with the rest of the theories and concepts discussed in this course gave me insight into the world of psychotherapy and will aid me in my journey of pursuing a career with troubled youth in the future. Communication with our clients is the most important part of our jobs as it will give clients the confidence to do what they want to do as they will have developed a bond of trust as they know that you are committed to helping them. Outcome 2 – Understand how to meet the communication and language needs, wishes and preferences of an individual 2.1 – There are two main ways with which we communicate, verbal and non-verbal. Our first method of establishing communication is using non-verbal communication, we use eye contact to make the person aware of us or tapping someone on the shoulder if they are unable to see you and then speak their name so that they know that it is to them we are speaking to. Body language or non-verbal communication is how we show a great majority of the information with which we are giving out. Verbal communication is the information which we are intending to give out.
I make sure that I am clear on instructions, times, dates or location and if appropriate I like to have it written down. I aim to make positive and lively conversation to promote the interest in conversation. It is important to be confident as if you are nervous you can sometimes create barriers making communication difficult. Eye contact shows that you are listening and are interested in what the person has to say. I try to be polite and friendly in order to create trust, people feel that you are approachable and tend to communicate better when they trust you.
The way you tell someone to do something, may be ok to one person, but it could be offensive, or threatening to another. When you offend that person, it is then when you have to be the bigger person and fix things. If not, the work place will not be very comfortable to work in for the both of you and it could effect the people around you, too. Another example in this area would be how you spend your time.
