Introduction
Communication and interpersonal skills are essential components in delivering goodquality nursing care. Communication is identified as one of the essential skills that students must acquire in order to make progress through their education and training to become qualified nurses (NMC, 2010). This book has been designed and developed to help students to understand the underlying reasons why communication skills have become so important in nursing as well as the underpinning theories that attempt to define what communication is. In this chapter, as in all of the chapters in this book, you will find examples and explanations of how different aspects of communication are applied in the nursing context. In this way, this book will help you to develop your knowledge and skills so that you feel prepared for practice.
