From personal to professional and from school to work, without communication there can be no understanding. Likewise, without understanding there is a failure to communicate. We must understand communication in whole as well as how to establish and maintain proper communication in all aspects of our lives. In turn, proper communication techniques will help us to establish skills, enabling effective teamwork, partnership, and leadership. Brian Tracy wrote, “Communication is a skill that you can learn. It’s like riding a bicycle or typing. If you are willing to work at it, you can improve the quality of every part of your life. (Brainyquote.com, 2010) Communication is a key factor in our lives; both personal and occupational. It consists of different variables. Verbal communication can be presented in formal, informal, direct, and indirect forms. Non-verbal communication can be expressed through voice, facial expression, body language, personal space, and environment. Indirect communication can be best represented by electronic communication devices enabling teleconferencing and videoconferencing in groups, as well as regular telephone conversations and written interactions such as email and text messaging. Indirect communication methods are widely used in society today. There are not many businesses that do not take advantage of the ability to communicate across a large distance without actually having to physically travel. Teleconferencing is made useful in the medical field as well. Many times, there may be a need for discussing a patient or a case with two or more parties not present. In this case the parties involved will communicate via telephone from different parts of the hospital. Teleconferencing and videoconferencing can also be taken advantage of from a larger perspective as well. I have witnessed a videoconference initiated by doctors in the operating room during a difficult case that required expert opinions from two other states. They were able to communicate with a surgeon in Florida and in Ohio in real time to gain the knowledge needed to perform the surgery successfully on the
