Even when strategically planned, all communication can vary in effectiveness and satisfaction. Communicating successfully and effectively is not an easy process. Every day communication occurs between ourselves and with others for a purpose, a reason and to achieve a specific result. Communication happens intentionally or unintentionally. Some people communicate more successfully and effectively than others. The key to improving and ultimately to being a successful communicator lays in understanding the process, the ways communication occurs and by learning how to implement positive and practical changes throughout the communication process. Communication contains several forms, verbal, written, and nonverbal forms such as symbols, or sign-language. It occurs between people who have a connected relationship, such as an employer and employee. The nature of the relationship that exists between connected individuals, directs the information we are willing to communicate. DeVito (2007) provides a simple definition of communication as, ‘the verbal and non-verbal interaction between two (or sometimes more than two) interdependent people’ (p.4). To detail, verbal communication occurs when a message is verbalised to the receiver, through expressions of speech, shouting, screaming or laughing. Nonverbal communication is expressed by the use of facial and/or body motions such as a smile or frown and they can be accompanied by gestures like waving or by pointing a finger. Symbolic communications are signs or symbols that have given meanings for example, the symbol of a black skull and crossbones on a white label commonly communicates that the contents of the package is dangerous or contain poison.
