Communication is an integral part of human life, it is at the heart of enjoying a meaningful and fulfilling life, it involves a shared understanding of messages and promote adequately to the survival of humanity. The essay will start by defining the three key words communication, encoding and decoding followed by reasons pointing to the fact that communication is dependent on encoding and decoding and finally, a conclusion shall be drawn. Communication is the dissemination of messages from one person to the other through a medium. ( Pearson & Nelson, 2003; 10) argues that “communication is a process by which meaning is exchanged between individuals through a common system of symbols, signs and behaviour”. A Message can be encoded using either speech, visual or reading channel. The communication process is made up of four key components. Those components include encoding, medium of transmission, decoding, and feedback, therefore, effective communication can be defined as an exchange of a desired meaning between individuals. There are also two other factors in the process, and those two factors are present in the form of the sender and the receiver. The communication process begins with the sender and ends with the receiver. Understanding Communication Skills, (2015). Encoding involves the arranging of ideas and thoughts into codes for easier interpretation (Pearson & Nelson, 2003) while a code is a systematic arrangement of symbols used to create meaning in the mind of another person or persons (ibid). The encoder is an individual, group, or organization who is involved in the process of encoding. This source is initially responsible for the success of the message.
