Communication In Athletic Training I am a student in the athletic training program at Missouri State University. I plan on staying at MSU until I receive my bachelor’s degree in ATC. I plan on completing a PhD in Physical Therapy. My hopes are to work in a clinical setting as an athletic trainer or physical therapist. Although I am still in the introductory phases of this program, I have already been told and realize that writing, especially professional and technical, will be used every day and is a very important aspect of my future profession. Every day documentation, referrals and reports are mandated and require up to date knowledge which come from a variety of sources. I have already begun clinical experience in a variety of settings including high school athletics, hospital clinics, as well as college athletics. At each of these settings, writing is used every day. As part of the requirements of law and general practice, athletic trainers have to record any injury, illness and the mechanisms that caused these problems. If an injury is substantial or out of their scope of practice, athletic trainers have to refer their patients to doctors or physicians that have expertise in such areas, if the athletic trainer does not communicate clearly what the injury is to the physician or doctor, it causes extensive problems and possible complications in the care for the patient. Constant communication is expected by the therapist to the physicians and physician offices. The athletic trainer or physical therapist is often the one who has to set up the appointments with specialist or primary care physician. This requires the athletic trainer’s to not only clearly identify the injury, but clearly write down or what the actual affliction the patient has endured.
